How to succeed at interview

First impressions matter, and in most interviews, you won’t get a second chance to make one. Whether you’re meeting face-to-face or logging in for a video interview, the way you present yourself in those first few minutes can set the tone for the entire conversation.

That’s why thorough preparation is key. An interview isn’t just about answering questions correctly, it’s your opportunity to showcase your experience, personality, and potential. It’s about demonstrating why you are the right person for the role and the right fit for the company.

Confidence, clarity, and credibility all play a part in interview success. At Ashley Kate, we’re here to equip you with the practical tools, insights, and confidence to stand out for all the right reasons – and to help you turn interviews into offers.

Interview Success Starts with Preparation

An interview isn’t just about answering questions, it’s a two-way conversation. It’s your chance to show the interviewer why you’re the right person for the role and to find out if the company and opportunity are the right fit for you. Before your interview, take time to:

  • Understand your CV inside out
Be ready to speak confidently about your skills, experience, and achievements – especially those most relevant to the role.
  • Prepare questions to ask
Asking insightful questions shows your interest in the company and the position. In first-stage interviews, focus on the role, team, and organisation. Save questions about salary and benefits for later stages or when an offer is made.

Research the Company

Doing your homework can help you stand out. Start by:

  • Visiting the company’s website to learn about their services, values, and recent news
  • Reviewing their social media channels and any press coverage
  • Asking your consultant if they have insider knowledge or have visited the client’s premises
  • Requesting company literature, such as an annual report, if available

Showing that you’ve taken the time to research the business demonstrates genuine interest and initiative.

Dress for the Role

Appearance can influence perception, even before you speak.

  • Always aim for smart business dress unless told otherwise by your consultant
  • Pay attention to personal grooming: clean shoes, tidy hair, and well-presented clothing
  • Keep accessories, perfume/aftershave, and makeup subtle and professional

If in doubt, ask your consultant about the client’s dress code.
